DIY Pinch and Twist Technique
Monday, June 3, 2013 at 10:50 AM This DIY Pinch and Twist Beach Cover-up Shirt can be created in under ten minutes! As a fair skinned gal, I always cover up at the beach and often with a large men's shirt. They're comfy, cool and can be worn in the water. It was super easy to give this plain white shirt a little pizzazz with Tulip Fabric Spray. This is a whole new way to approach tie dye, using a spray instead of a bottle and your finger tips instead of rubber bands.
You will need
100% cotton man's shirt
Tulip Fabric Sprays in Metallic Silver, Metallic Gold and Fucshia
Tulip T-Shirt Form
Tulip Surface Cover
DIY Pinch and Twist Technique from DIY Doyenne TV for iLovetoCreate.com
1.) Make sure your shirt is pre-washed to remove sizing. 2.) Grasp shirt in spot where you want to center your pinch and twist. Twist shirt in a clockwise direction. 3.) Hold silver spray 12" from shirt and give it a few spritzes. 4.) Repeat to make three total pinched sections. 5.) Repeat with gold spray turning your twists counter clockwise. 6.) Repeat a final time using pink spray and turning clockwise. 7.) Allow shirt to dry for 72 hours before washing and 4 hours before wearing.

DIY Tie Dye T-Shirt Bracelet
Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at 12:00 AMTie Dye Your Summer is rolling on, and I've got a bracelet you can make in a flash with any tie dyed t-shirt! This is a perfect Summer Camp craft for teens. So easy to make and customize. Tie dye a t-shirt, cut into strips, fold, glue and secure in fold over findings. That's it! It doesn't get much easier than that. Tulip Tie Dyes are so easy to use, they're goof proof. Plus how delicious are these vibrant colors? Make an armful in a variety of colors and stack 'em up!
You will need:
White Cotton T-shirt (pre-washed)
(Kit includes dye, bottles, gloves, sheeting and rubber bands)
Metal Fold-over Findings with Clasp and Extension Chain
Ruler
Fabric Scissors
Flat nose pliers
Wash shirt first to remove sizing. Tie dye works best with natural fibers like cotton. Wet shirt. Use rubber bands to tie off shirt in banded sections. Add dye to sections. It's okay if this isn't perfect, trust me. I used neon yellow, pink and orange. Let dyed shirt set in plastic bag for 6-8 hours and wash and dry following instructions on package.
Measure a section of fabric that is approximately 3" wide and long enough to wrap wrist. Your clasp adds about 1/2", so factor that in when measuring. Cut fabric into four even strips.
Add a little glue along inside of metal finding. Fold each strip in half and line up between thumb and forefinger. Gently place in finding as shown. You want to be sure the fabric sections hit the top of the inside of the finding so they're secured when closed.
Use flat nose pliers to compress finding over fabric. You have to squeeze this really hard, so don't be shy! Repeat for opposite side (try to keep the folds in the same direction on both sides) and allow the glue to dry overnight.
These look best in groups, so make an armful! I'm showing a group of three in the photos!
How would you style these bracelets? Do tell!

Tie Dye an Upcycled Skirt
Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at 7:05 AMI did it! I actually tie dyed something! Alert the media! Though this upcycled thrift store skirt isn't everything I had in my mind's eye, I think I'm on to something fun. I plan to explore this idea further. Creativity is a process and we can't be worried about getting everything right on the first try, because that's bound to be disappointing. I don't believe in "craft fails" as much as I believe in craftortunities. With a little work and some more fine tuning, these bulls eye style tie dye flowers could be very, very cool. It's my goal to take tie dye into a new direction over the next few months and these saturated, colorful, fabulous Tulip dyes are the perfect way to do that. They have made it so easy to tie dye, anyone can do it, even me! Read on to find out how I turned a $2.00 thrift store white eyelet skirt into a vibrant tie dyed creation.
You will need:
White eyelet 100% cotton skirt
*Tulip Tie Dye in Orange, Pink and Yellow
Tulip Fabric Markers in Black, Neon Yellow, Neon Orange, Neon Pink
*Rubber Bands
*Gloves
*Plastic Sheeting
Plastic Bag
Washing Machine
(*All starred items come with Tulip tie dye kits)
1. Gather your materials, be ready to rock and roll before you add water and mix the dyes. WASH skirt to remove sizing or fabric softener. 2. Follow instructions to mix. 3. Wet skirt before dyeing. Tie off skirt by grasping and twisting small sections, band, twist again and band. Repeat to make these small twisted sections across bottom of skirt. 4. Add lighter dye to center of each section.
5. Add orange to bottom sections. 6. Wrap entire skirt up with more rubber bands and add pink. Wash and dry following instructions. 7. Grab some markers! 8. Turn bulls eye sections into flowers using black marker. Add some butterflies if you like too!
Next time, I'm thinking of dyeing the fabric a soft color first, then doing a monochromatic tie dye. I may go back and over dye this skirt pale pink. I'm also visualizing just the flowers with out any extra dye or patterns around them so they create fun and colorful splashes of color on a blank white canvas. I'm also thinking of using the resist dye to prevent the dye from getting anywhere I don't want it to be. Are you a tie dye fan? What kinds of tie dyed projects would you like to see? Do tell! 4 Modern and Unique Tie Dye Techniques
Monday, May 23, 2011 at 3:45 PM
Are you looking for a totally different way to tie dye? If you are ready for a new tie dye challenge, then here are 4 techniques to try to get the lastest fashion-forward looks! And they are just as fun and easy as the classic styles. They are ombre, shibori, urbanesque, and marble. Here’s how you do ’em!
All of these instructions are for the surface shown in the above photo; however, you can get the same look using different kinds of surfaces, just follow the instructions!
Shibori Tie Dye
Materials
– Tulip® One-Step Dye™
– Loose-fitting shirt – white – 100% cotton
– PVC pipe
– Plastic tablecloth
Instructions
1. Prewash shirt to remove sizing. Do not use fabric softener.
2. Cover work surface with plastic tablecloth. Lay damp shirt on prepared surface.
3. Wearing plastic gloves, add water to Fuchsia dye bottle to line indicated on bottle. Replace cap tightly and shake until dye is dissolved.
4. Place the PVC pipe at the top of the damp tee then roll tee around pipe, rolling down to the bottom of shirt. Scrunch fabric tightly around pipe.
5. Squeeze Fuchsia dye onto scrunched shirt, making sure to rotate pipe if necessary to cover shirt from top to bottom.
6. Unwrap shirt from pipe then cover with plastic tablecloth and let sit 4 to 6 hours. Wash in a large load of water with a small amount of laundry soap and dry in dryer.
Here's a video also showing this technique!
Tie dye using Marbles

3. Place a marble inside front of shirt then tightly rubber band. Continue to add marbles where desired.

5. Squeeze Turquoise onto shirt, avoiding marble sections and carefully lifting shirt to dye back if needed.
6. Replace lid of Fuchsia dye bottle with sprayer from kit. Test on a paper towel, then spray top of each section of fabric with marble, letting overspray blend with Turquoise dye to create Purple color.

MAYA IN THE MOMENT TEEN CRAFT: Homework Book Bag
Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at 12:33 AMI have my SAT test for college in two weeks! Aside from my regular high school homework, I now have an extra load of studying to worry about. To help me stay organized, I decided I needed a separate book bag to hold all my SAT-related paperwork and stuff. I couldn't use any old bag, I had to make my own special "good luck" one.
I started with a white canvas book bag. You can find them at Walmart or Target or other stores like that. I knew I wanted a distressed kind of look, so I decided to go with the Tulip® Dye Techniques Kit™.
It comes with these cool things to add patterns to your fabric, like doilies and animal print stencils. I used brown and hot pink dye and sprayed all over the bag in different areas.(the kit comes with spray bottles too) At first I was kinda scared to use the fancy kit, but I'm glad I tried it, it was super easy and I like how colorful the dyes came out. Actually, I liked it almost better than usual tie dye because you don't have to rubber band or tie anything. You just spray and go! You have to let it set for four hours and then wash and dry it.
What I was looking forward to the most was decorating the front flap of the bag! I used a transfer.
I learned that there are two types of transfers, cold peel and hot peel. This one was a hot peel, that means that as soon as you are done ironing it on, you have to quickly peel off the plastic backing before it cools.
For the top center of my bag, I felt like it needed something so I used a Tulip stencil of a bird. I added a layer of Tulip Glitter Bond and then Tulip Fashion Glitter.
You pour the glitter over the wet glue...
...and then peel away the stencil!
Isn't it cute? The glue dries clear.
Here is my finished bag. I added a silk flower in the center of the doily design. I love it! I think my bag good enough to get me into college!
