Thunderbolt Shoes

Tuesday, September 17, 2013

No matter what kind of shoes I buy my boys, they always end up favoring the boat/deck type shoes that they can slip on and off easily.  They are great because they are inexpensive and easy to find, but we like to add a personal touch to make them extra fun.  My oldest requested red thunderbolts and here's how they turned out.

DIY Dolce and Gabbana Inspired Shoes

Monday, June 17, 2013
Ever since I bought these cork wedges a few years ago, I've been planning on adding some painted details to the sides.  Time got away from me, but as soon as I saw the Dolce and Gabbana Sicilian Folk Art Collection for Spring/Summer, I knew I had to get these babies painted up!  Inspired by folk art carved and painted details on antique wagons, the D and G version of these shoes are stunning  Haute Couture artworks  They're also on "sale" for 1600 dollars...which is still light years beyond my budget.  Sigh.

Our house is decorated in what I call Folk Art Chic, with tons of little details like these.  I even have a Folk Art Chic Pinterest board!  I knew exactly what I wanted to do.  Since the shoes were cork, I used Tulip Soft Fabric paints and a little Aleene's Spray Acrylic sealer.  It took under an hour to turn a plain pair of wedges into a fashion statement of my own.  Using stencils for the flowers made quick work of those larger details.  If you look at the originals, you'll see that they're not perfectly perfect, they're meant to look handmade.  That took a lot of pressure off of me when painting, and I've got to say, I think these details turned out even more precise than the originals!

What you need:
Cork or fabric wedges (try to find some that are solid cork and not just a thin layer wrapped around the wedge)
Tulip Soft Fabric Paint in yellow, red, green, white and turquoise
Aleene's Spray Acrylic Sealer Matte Finish
Tulip Flexible Body Art Stencils in Fantasy
Scissors
Painter's tape
Small detail paint brushes

1.) Tape of bottoms and tops of shoes exposing only the cork.  Use your fingernail to press tape into the grooves and seal.  2.)  Start with the yellow arcs, these go along the top of shoe first, then add white dots using the tip of your paintbrush.  3.)  Fill in the open spaces in your arcs alternating between blue and green paint.  4.)  Paint tops and bottoms of both shoes.  Allow to dry before next step.

5.) Cut large and medium size flowers from stencil.  Place large flower stencil on the center of the largest area on the outside of each shoe.  6.) Use a stipple or stiffer brush to stencil red paint into petals.  Allow to dry to tacky before removing stencil.  Repeat for second shoe.  Use the smaller stencil on the insides of shoe to add a slightly smaller red flower in the center of the largest area as in picture. 7.) Add a yellow dot to the center of each flower with a tiny white accent. You can opt to draw the outline for the vines/leaves on with a pencil if you prefer, then paint the green details.  A finely tipped paintbrush works best.    8.) Remove tape and commence dancing!  Hooray!

That's all there is too it!  I am so seriously smitten with these shoes and I can't wait for an excuse to wear them.  Is grocery shopping out of the question?  Hee.
Did you like the D and G Sicilian Folk Art Spring/Summer collection or was it a little too over the top for your taste?  Do tell!

DIY Summertime Swirly Shoes

Wednesday, June 5, 2013

Hey everyone! It's SUMMERTIME! YAAAAAY! I found these cute kicks on clearance at Target for five bucks. (Score!) I LOVE the color, but since it's summertime I thought I'd make them pop even more by adding yarn swirls and gems.

– Shoes
– Yarn
– Fabric Fusion
– Gem
– Cold Glass of lemonade (recommended!)
Squeeze a quarter sized amount on to shoe. Pinch the end of yarn and apply it to the shoe. Next, simply wrap around in a spiral/swirl. Repeat until you get the look you want. I like the different sizes of circles that I ended up with!
Now add a little drop of glue in the center of each swirl and add a gem. You can do the matchy-matchy thing or add some contrast like I did.
I love my new shoes, they are so cute and are great for the beach or pool side parties! Now, where is that glass of lemonade??

MAYA IN THE MOMENT: Double Rainbow Glittered Sandals

Double Rainbow Glittered Sandals!

Here is Arizona, it's not even February, but it already feels like spring. My mom bought these formerly tan shoes on clearance for the sole purpose (pardon the pun) of revamping them. too bad I got to them first.
Actually, this is a collab between us. I came up with the glittered rainbow heels and she finished the pair  off with the flowers, which I love!

 Supplies:

1 pair of tall chunky strappy sandals
Assorted Tulip Soft Fabric Paints
Crafty Chica Extreme Embellishment Glue or Tulip Glitter Bond
Crafty Chica Glitters or Tulip Fashion Glitters
Tulip® Fabric Paintbrushes™
Flowers for the tops of the shoes
Tulip Beads in a Bottle
Aleene's Spray Sealer, Glossy

Paint the tops of the shoes with the fabric paint. Next, paint the bottoms in a rainbow-layered pattern. Use can use a square brush to keep your lines even. Let it all dry.

Wash your brush and then dip it the glue and apply one color at a time. Add the glue on the red, then add the red glitter, move on to the next color, etc.

Add the Beads in a Bottle to the tops of them, and then add the flower on top of each shoe.

Crafty Chica's oilcloth covered sneakers!

Friday, February 25, 2011
I'm a sucker for cheap shoes. These canvas sneakers were $5 and served as the perfect base for a little oilcloth magic! Here are the steps to make your own!

What you need:
Blank canvas sneakers
Oilcloth
scissors
tracing paper, chalk
Trim, buttons

Stuff the shoe with fabric or tissue to make the top firm. Place the tracing paper over the top of the shoe and rub the chalk over it to create an impression of the seam.

Do this for each shoe, and then cut out the oilcloth to fit the pattern.

You'll need to stuff the shoe again to make it firm.

Apply the glue and apply the oilcloth to the top of the shoe. Hold down all the edges until it is sealed. Add trim around the edges, buttons and Tulip® 3D Fashion Paint on the back part of the shoe.

Aren't they cute? You can use any kind of fabric to cover your shoes! I also painted the inside of the shoes too, they needed it...

DIY Splattered Blue Suede Heel Revamp

Friday, February 11, 2011

These aren't the blue suede shoes you're used to! I wanted to splatter them up and make them totally unique and fun in this fun DIY project...and I did it in just a few minutes! Totally fun and easy! Here's how you do it:

DIY Painted Blue Suede Shoe Revamp

What you need:
– Tulip® 3D Fashion Paint in colors of your choice (I used pink, black, purple, and silver)
– paper towels
– painters tape
– pair of velvet or fabric pumps (ours were from Charlotte Russe)

What you do:

splattered shoes

1. Lay down paper towels or newspaper to protect your work surface.
2. Cover sole of shoe and heel with painters tape. Stuff toe and inside heel with paper towels.
3. Shake your paints well before starting and squeeze some paint out on work area ti remove any air to remove air bubbles.
4. Holding the paint about a foot above the shoe, squeeze the paint in an even motion quickly back and forth. This creates a steadier stream and a more splattered random look. Do this with all the colors and layer to get your desired look.
5. Let dry and remove tape and paper towels.

Now they are ready to wear, so go out and rock them!!!

Why you ALWAYS should have a pack of Tulip Soft Paints ready to go...

Friday, November 26, 2010
In case your nana or another family member or friend needs an emergency shoe paint job!

My nana is 92, and today I am taking her to a funeral (one of her favorite cousins passed away at 94 this week). Nana has a pair of silver shoes that she considers to be the comfiest ever. But she needs black comfy shoes to wear to the services. Last night while visiting her after Thanksgiving dinner,  she asked me if I could paint her beloved metallic slip-ons when I got home so she could wear them in the morning.

"Of course!" I replied. I love it when family members ask me for crafty assistance!

These shoes are soft metallic vinyl. In case you are wondering, shoe polish is stinky. Spray paint rubs/flakes off, but Tulip® Soft Fabric Paint™ ? This is one of the reasons it was invented!

First, you want to wipe down the surface. This vinyl is porous, but if it wasn't, I would have sanded it a bit so the fabric would grip the paint better. I simply applied a coat on each shoe with a paint brush, let it all dry and then applied a second coat. I made sure to get all the edges too, so no one can ever tell these shoes used to be silver.

Here they are finished and ready to wear! I'm Nana will love them when I take them to her today. It doesn't need a sealer, but if you want, you can add a spray varnish in matte or shiny. The paint has excellent coverage: I applied two coats with one little pot, and I still have some left.

My suggestion - especially with the holiday season here - is to buy a multi-pack so you have little pots of different colors. They'll come in handy to touch-up belts, handbags, furniture, shoes, clothing and more.

Here is Nana applying some lipstick. Yes, she is using a purse mirror I made for her twenty years ago, she still uses it daily! I love my nana!
